In this short discourse, we will touch on various trends in mechanics, particularly solid mechanics associated with structural materials, thin films (nano-multilayer structures), bio-mechanics, and so on and so forth. We will focus on the important out-standing issues that call for collaborative efforts from different disciplines. Specific topics to cover in this discourse include the following:
Mechanics of adiabatic shear banding in hexagonal close packed (hcp) metals and alloys with strong strain hardening. Case studies will be provided for titanium and magnesium and their alloys.
Mechanics of thin films, particularly nanometer multi-layer structures consisting of hcp constituents. Case studies will be provided for Mg/Ti and Mg/Zr systems.
Size effects in different materials systems including face centered cubic (fcc), body centered cubic (bcc), hcp metals and bulk metallic glasses (BMGs).
Extraordinary mechanical behavior of metal matrix composites reinforced with high volume fraction of nanometer ceramic particles (metal matrix nano-composite—MMNCs). Case studies will be provided for Al-MMNC and Mg-MMNC.
Self-stiffening effect of natural MMNCs under high-strain rate loading. Case studies will be provided for nacre (mother of pearl).
Probing post-necking stress-strain behavior using instrumented nano-indentation.
Temperature-strain rate coupled effect on the mechanical properties of bulk metallic glasses.
